I'm a native of Nashville, where I enjoyed a long career in journalism as a feature writer and editor at The Tennessean before leaving the newspaper business to become a freelance writer. In my newspaper days, I covered fashion, home design, gardening, travel and other features, and I was travel editor at The Tennessean from 1998 until 2006. I'm a graduate of the University of Tennessee.
Currently, I write a monthly garden feature for The Tennessean, two garden blogs, garden and travel features, stories and essays. I also teach Creative Writing in the Community Education program at Watkins College of Art in Nashville, and I am on the faculty of MTSU Write at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tenn. as a nonfiction and fiction mentor. I lead writing workshops in creative non-fiction and travel writing, and classes and workshops on a variety of gardening topics.
